The 10th Dalai Lama

By Christian Schmidt

1816_____Tsültrim Gyatso, the 10th Dalai Lama, is born. He turns out to be a sensitive person with far greater sympathies for the common folk than for the nobility. It has become all too clear that the ruling class is constantly raising taxes merely to enrich itself. His rejection of such customary relations of power will very likely cost the “Ocean of Morality” his life not long afterwards. The ministers are anxious about their loss of influence upon the Dalai Lama’s reaching the age of majority.

1837_____The 10th Dalai Lama dies at the age of 21. The cause of his death remains unknown to this day. He has neither a strong nor a healthy constitution, and it is possible that he has been progressively poisoned. Another account, meanwhile, holds that he is buried one day when the ceiling of his chamber collapses on him. The reason for the collapse, however, and the origin of the mysterious wound on his neck have never been established.
