The 9th Dalai Lama

By Christian Schmidt

1806_____Lobsang Lungtog Gyatso, the 9th Dalai Lama, is born – at the same time as a second boy who is also considered a possible reincarnation of the 8th Dalai Lama. The two are tested: they are required to recognise items in the possession of the 8th Dalai Lama. The 9th Dalai Lama is the boy born in the province of Kham on the upper reaches of the Yangtse. He is enthroned at the tender age of two in Potala Palace, where he receives the name “Ocean of Prophecies”. Not much more is known about Lungtog Gyatso than the fact that he was a cheerful and charismatic child. As yet he is ignorant of the growing arrogance of China’s governors, who demand payment for every trivial matter.

1815_____The 9th Dalai Lama dies on 26 March at the age of nine, probably of pneumonia.
